Resin and Dinosaurs

To honor the passing of Sam “They do move in herds” Neill, we thought we’d talk a little bit about tree sap.

When released externally, tree sap hardens into resin to deter predators and preserve moisture.

Humans haven’t yet been able to resurrect dinosaurs from the bugs trapped when the sap fossilizes into amber, but a few thousand years ago we learned that you can burn the resin.

The sap from a few hardy species of desert tree smells so good that ancient cultures used it as an offering to gods.

Wars were fought over control of the trees, and it was once as valuable as gold, as evidenced by a wise man’s Christmas gift of frankincense and myrrh.

The wonders of modern logistics mean that you don’t have to be a king or high priest to enjoy fancy resin incense, but you do need a way to burn it.

“How” is a question we’re often asked, so here is a little demonstration.

We’re always happy to discuss your favorite dinosaur and/or Sam Neill movie.
