Island Creek Valley
The last part of our West Virginia trip was a homecoming to the small creekside town where Augur‘s mother was born.
As she’s gotten older, she’s become more willing to share stories of her youth. It was bittersweet to see places she is so conflicted about, and the ways that they are at once unrecognizable and unchanged.
Oh, the two young ladies in the old photograph are Augur’s grandmother‘s aunts. They were described as “meaner than piss,” and willing “to hit you with a rock just to watch you bleed.”
